The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has reaffirmed its commitment to solution driven and ethical journalism, declaring an end to the era of media manipulation and propaganda.
This came  as  the NUJ, council hosted Oyo Central senatorial hopeful, Ademola Wasiu Alli, at the NUJ Millennium Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
Chairman of the council, Akeem Abas, disclosed that the union has trained over 300 journalists on modern media practices within just 100 days in office, positioning members to better navigate the challenges of misinformation, digital disruption, and public accountability. He stressed that the focus has shifted toward development oriented reporting that prioritises facts, balance, and societal impact.
Abas maintained that journalists must no longer be used as instruments of blackmail or political propaganda, but as agents of democratic development. He noted that continuous training and capacity building would remain central to the union’s agenda, ensuring that practitioners are well equipped to report governance issues responsibly and hold public office seekers accountable.
The NUJ boss also emphasised that a well informed media landscape is critical to national development, adding that the union would sustain efforts to promote professionalism and credibility in the industry amid the rising influence of social media and fake news.
While Alli used the visit to outline his Senatorial ambition and seek media support, the engagement largely underscored the evolving role of the press in shaping governance discourse in Oyo State, with the NUJ reiterating its readiness to lead a new era of responsible journalism.
