The Oyo State Government has given a month deadline to residents and business owners in the state, to provide standard waste bins for their homes and business premises as the state government intensifies efforts to improve environmental sanitation and proper waste management.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, announced the directive while speaking with journalists in Ibadan. He said the enforcement exercise would begin on September 1, 2026, after the grace period, with government officials moving from house to house to ensure compliance.
According to the commissioner, every residential building, commercial outlet, shopping complex and business premises must have waste bins that are suitable for the size of the property, the number of occupants and the quantity of waste generated.
He explained that the measure is aimed at reducing indiscriminate waste disposal and promoting a cleaner and healthier environment across the state, reminding residents that waste collection must only be handled by government accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs).
He warned that anyone found using unapproved waste collectors or dumping refuse through illegal channels would be prosecuted in line with existing environmental laws.
He urged residents who are unsure of the accredited waste contractors in their areas or who have complaints about waste evacuation services to contact the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) or the Department of Environmental Health Services under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for assistance.
The commissioner further disclosed that enforcement officers would verify evidence of payment of waste evacuation charges during inspections. He stressed that property owners and business operators are expected to keep up with their monthly waste disposal payments as part of the compliance requirements.
Aderinto added that the exercise is an extension of the state’s ongoing environmental sanitation campaign, noting that owning a waste bin and engaging an accredited waste collector would not be enough if homes, business premises and surrounding environments are left unclean.
He appealed to residents to take advantage of the one-month grace period to comply with the directive, describing proper waste disposal as a shared responsibility that is essential for maintaining a cleaner, safer and healthier Oyo State.
