The Oyo State Government has warned residents to maintain proper environmental practices as rainfall intensifies across Ibadan and other parts of the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Engineer Dr Ademola Aderinto, issued the warning following reports of increasing cases of blocked drainages. He cautioned that indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways could lead to avoidable flooding and destruction of property, stressing that while no major flooding is anticipated, communities may experience localised flooding if necessary precautions are ignored.
Aderinto noted that recent rainfall patterns, accompanied by strong winds, make it imperative for residents to take preventive measures, including securing their homes and adhering strictly to environmental guidelines.
He further expressed concern over the rising trend of waste disposal in drainages despite earlier advisories, warning that such actions could obstruct water channels and hinder access during emergencies. He urged residents to comply with the state’s waste management system and desist from acts capable of endangering lives and property.
The Commissioner also encouraged the public to report environmental violations through the OYSSS digital platform, noting that individuals who provide verifiable evidence may be rewarded.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and the environment, calling on residents to support its efforts by keeping drainages clean and free of waste. The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade.
