Former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has announced his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing concerns over the current state of Nigeria’s political environment.
Obi disclosed his decision in a message posted on his official account on X on Sunday, where he raised alarm over what he described as rising tension, deepening divisions and increasing interference within the country’s polity.
He noted that, the atmosphere surrounding political participation in Nigeria has become increasingly unhealthy, with cases of intimidation, insecurity and persistent attacks on political actors becoming more frequent. He expressed worry that the situation could discourage credible individuals from stepping forward to serve the nation.
The former presidential candidate also lamented what he sees as a growing misuse of institutions meant to protect citizens, alleging that such structures are now being deployed in ways that put pressure on individuals with genuine intentions to contribute to national development
Despite his concerns, Obi clarified that his decision to part ways with the ADC was not due to any personal disagreement with the party’s leadership, maintaining that his move was guided purely by principle and the need to remain consistent with his vision for a better Nigeria.
Political analysts suggest that, the development may reshape alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as Obi remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics following his performance in the 2023 presidential race under the Labour Party.
