The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the education sector, saying the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde has implemented several measures aimed at strengthening teaching and learning across the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated this in a message commemorating the 2026 Teachers’ Day, describing teachers as vital to the development of the state and the future of its citizens.

Oyelade said the government had recruited more than 21,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel for public primary and secondary schools since 2019.

He explained that the figure included 5,000 newly recruited secondary school teachers and the conversion of 2,000 non-teaching staff to teaching positions under the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) during the administration’s first year.

He added that another 7,000 teachers were recruited through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), while 7,500 were employed through TESCOM in 2025.

According to him, the recruitment exercises were conducted based on merit, with applicants subjected to written examinations and interviews to ensure that qualified personnel were employed.

The commissioner said the government had also introduced measures aimed at improving teachers’ welfare and career advancement.

These, he noted, included regular payment of salaries and promotions, leave allowances, wage awards, improved car loans and the removal of the six-year waiting period for the promotion of primary school teachers.

He further disclosed that the government had established 10 TESCOM zonal offices and appointed teachers to key administrative positions, including Permanent Secretaries at TESCOM headquarters and Permanent Secretaries/Teacher Generals at the zonal offices.

Oyelade also mentioned the establishment of SUBEB zonal offices across the three senatorial districts and the rehabilitation of the access road in front of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) State Secretariat as part of government’s interventions.

He commended the NUT for its collaboration with the government and its contributions to the development of education through teacher training programmes, students’ quiz competitions and other initiatives.

The commissioner congratulated teachers across Oyo State on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, urging them to remain committed to their role in shaping the future through quality education.
