The All Progressives Congress (APC ) in Oyo state has dismissed the opposition summit hosted in Ibadan by Governor Seyi Makinde, describing the gathering as lacking the depth and coordination required to pose a serious challenge in 2027, while also raising concerns over what it termed “unsettling rhetoric” from the meeting.
The summit, which drew prominent opsition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, was reportedly convened to strategize on how to unseat the ruling party.
However, in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC said it saw no credible threat in the alliance, insisting that the opposition figures were “just wasting their time.”
“They (opposition figures) are just wasting their time as it is just impossible for them to catch up with a man who is several kilometers ahead of them in a marathon. Funny enough, there are some individuals among these opposition jesters who know that President Tinubu travels in a speed of light to outpace his opponents when it comes to real politics but they would not say the truth to their co-travelers because a dog that is destined for perdition would not mind the whistle of the hunter,” the statement read.
Beyond dismissing the political weight of the meeting, the APC expressed worry over remarks allegedly linked to Governor Makinde, warning that references to volatile political episodes should not be taken lightly. The party stressed that such comments could heighten tension ahead of the next general elections if not properly addressed.
“It is even shameful that Gov. Makinde, who has established to be a naive and deceitful political players, is now the moral compass for some politicians who have recorded irredeemable failures in politics and governance in the past. As it stands now, they have gathered only palm fronts to fix a damaged vehicle even as they look at the direction of fishermen for technical support,” the party added.
The APC further cautioned against any form of inciting statements, particularly in relation to the 2027 elections, while maintaining confidence in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The ‘Operation Wetie’ threat which came from Gov. Makinde would not be taken with a pinch of salt as it was a revelation but he should realize that no unrest or violence would mar the 2027 general elections.
The polls will be hitch-free and credible while he (Makinde) would not find an avenue to escape from the country before May 29, 2027 so that he would be made to answer for the many cases of abuse of office and corruption hanging on his neck,” the statement concluded.
