The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will work to ensure peaceful and violence-free general elections in 2027.
IGP Disu gave the assurance in Lagos at a reception organised by old students of St Gregory’s College, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award alongside other distinguished alumni.
The IGP said the police had gained experience in managing elections peacefully, citing recent elections in Ekiti and Osun states as examples. According to him, despite concerns over possible violence during the Osun election, no death was recorded.
He added that police commissioners and other officers expected to participate in the 2027 electoral process had recently been briefed and prepared for their responsibilities.
“We give you our word that the elections will be peaceful and will go very well,” Disu said.
Speaking on the honour from his alma mater, the police chief described the award as particularly meaningful because it came from the institution where he was educated.
He also encouraged younger Gregorians to uphold the school’s values of unity, respect for elders and excellence, urging them to strive to give their best in their various endeavours.
