The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has dismissed claims of an alleged impeachment plot against Governor Seyi Makinde, describing the narrative as a “badly written script” designed to mislead the public and attract undue sympathy.
The party argued that the claims were a distraction from what it termed the governor’s dwindling political fortunes.
The controversy follows denials by some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, reportedly loyal to the governor, who rejected involvement in any impeachment move.
The lawmakers also alleged that prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, and former First Lady Florence Ajimobi, were being linked to the purported plot.
In a statement issued in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC described the allegations against the named individuals as unfounded, insisting that no credible external forces were pushing for Makinde’s impeachment.
The party further alleged that the governor orchestrated the claims to secure public sympathy amid political challenges, adding that if the Assembly had acted on what it described as “multiple cases of abuse of office,” impeachment proceedings would have commenced earlier.
The opposition party also linked the impeachment narrative to recent comments by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, alleging that the development was an attempt to deflect attention from claims concerning a supposed plan to dethrone the Olubadan. It maintained that the impeachment claims were politically motivated and aimed at managing public perception.
Reiterating its stance, the APC accused the governor of several alleged infractions, including mismanagement of local government funds, land related controversies, contract inflation, and the alleged diversion of federal relief funds meant for victims of the Bodija explosion.
The party insisted that such allegations constitute impeachable offences, adding that “no amount of propaganda” would shield the governor from accountability.
