The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has accepted to serve as the Royal Father and Chairman of the 2026 World Egungun Festival, assuring organisers of his full support as preparations gather momentum for the globally acclaimed cultural event.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the monarch at his Ibadan residence, where the Ministry’s management team formally presented the invitation. He said the visit also provided an opportunity to appreciate the Olubadan’s longstanding support for cultural programmes, even before his ascension to the throne, describing him as a foremost
Cultural ambassador whose leadership would further enhance the festival’s prestige.
Olatubosun revealed that key improvements have been introduced ahead of the 2026 edition to address observations made by the Olubadan during the 2025 festival, particularly in the areas of visibility and convenience for VIP guests.
He added that no fewer than 200 masquerades are expected from within and outside Nigeria, with about 10 countries and over 100 groups and associations already indicating interest in participating in the colourful celebration.
The Commissioner also disclosed that the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, has pledged to attend the festival, underscoring its growing national and international appeal.
“We want Ibadan to become a major tourist destination and a cultural hub that the world will continually reckon with,” Olatubosun said.
In his response, the Olubadan accepted the invitation and assured the delegation of his presence and royal backing for the programme.
Meanwhile, as part of broader preparations, the Oyo State Government, through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, held a strategic meeting with leaders and key members of the Ijo Oje Parapo Welfare Association across various local government areas.
The meeting took place at the Town Hall within the palace of the Akibio of Ilora and focused on strengthening collaboration and consolidating plans for the 2026 edition.
Dr. Olatubosun noted that the renewed prominence of the Egungun
Festival has continued to attract international attention, including interest from Brazil, as members of the diaspora reconnect with the authentic custodians of the tradition in Oyo State. He expressed optimism that, with proper packaging and sustained efforts, the festival could attain UNESCO recognition within the next six years.
“We must promote the entertainment and tourism potential of the festival globally, while taking full ownership and preserving its authenticity,” he said.
