The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has applauded Nigerian journalists for their sustained contributions to nation-building, democratic growth and accountability as the country celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In a joint statement released to mark the occasion, the Council’s Chairman, Mr Akeem Abas, and Secretary, Temidayo Adu, reaffirmed the media’s crucial role in promoting democracy and strengthening public institutions.
The Council acknowledged the efforts of journalists in keeping citizens informed, drawing attention to societal concerns and holding public officeholders accountable through responsible and professional reporting.
With another electioneering season approaching, Oyo NUJ urged media practitioners to remain committed to the principles of fairness, objectivity, accuracy and balance in their coverage of political activities.
It emphasised the importance of providing equal opportunities for political stakeholders to express their views while warning against the misuse of media platforms for propaganda, blackmail, character assassination and the circulation of unverified information.
The Council further advised journalists to strengthen their fact-checking practices and avoid spreading misinformation, disinformation, hate speech and other forms of content that could threaten national unity or disrupt peaceful coexistence.
Political parties and candidates were also encouraged to focus their campaigns on substantive issues, presenting policies, ideas and programmes that address Nigeria’s pressing challenges rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.
As part of its Independence Day message, the Council called on Nigerians to uphold patriotism, national unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence while demonstrating confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.
It described the anniversary as a moment for reflection on the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers and an opportunity for citizens to renew their commitment to building a peaceful, inclusive and economically prosperous nation.
Oyo NUJ extended its congratulations to Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, urging journalists to continue prioritising public interest in the discharge of their professional duties.
The statement reiterated that a media environment anchored on truth, accountability, professionalism and ethical standards remains essential to democratic stability and sustainable national development.
“Journalists must remain guided by truth, professionalism and public interest, particularly during electioneering. Our platforms must be used to inform, educate and hold public institutions accountable, rather than promote crisis or deepen divisions,” the statement read.
