Makinde Presents Staff of Office to Three Ibadan Obas, Reaffirms Role of Tradition in Governance

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has presented the staff and instruments of office to three newly elevated crown wearing Obas in Ibadanland, reiterating his administration’s commitment to harmonising traditional institutions with modern governance for the progress of the state.

The ceremony, held on Friday at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan, saw the formal recognition of the Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin; the Ekarun Olubadan, Oba Oyekola Babalola (SAN); and the Ekarun Balogun, Oba Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Barrister Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, Governor Makinde described the conferment of beaded crowns as a reflection of a dynamic tradition that continues to evolve without losing its core values.
He noted that the elevation of the High Chiefs was rooted in the Chiefs Law of Oyo State and aligned with the long standing customs of Ibadanland, adding that the move was necessary to preserve the structure and continuity of the traditional system. According to him, traditional institutions remain vital infostering stability, unity, and identity among the people, while also serving as key partners in governance, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.

The governor urged the newly crowned Obas to see their elevation as a call to higher service, charging them to lead with wisdom, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility in their respective domains.

In his remarks, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, represented by the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, commended the governor for sustaining the integrity of the Ibadan traditional system and giving it deserved recognition. He described the development as a welcome step that reflects growing understanding and respect for chieftaincy matters.

Also speaking, President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Barrister Ajeniyi Ajewole, lauded the state government’s efforts in promoting the cultural heritage of Ibadanland.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo, described the event as a significant milestone in the history of Ibadanland, noting that it reaffirmed the state’s dedication to due process, cultural preservation, and adherence to established laws guiding traditional institutions.
The event attracted top government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, and other dignitaries from across the state.
