The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing a sustainable energy sector, aimed at driving economic growth and lifting residents out of poverty through reliable power infrastructure.
Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Prof. Dahud Shangodoyin, made this known on Wednesday during a press briefing at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, noting that the state is prioritising long-term, structured electricity solutions to boost industrialisation and attract investment.
He disclosed that the state has commenced a 12-megawatt Ibadan Independent Power Gas Project designed to supply electricity to critical government facilities and strategic public institutions. According to him, the initiative will reduce operational costs and stimulate economic activities, especially as the state currently receives about 183 megawatts from the national grid—far below the estimated 520 megawatts required for optimal growth.
Shangodoyin added that the government plans to generate an additional 120 megawatts before 2027, targeting a total of about 300 megawatts to significantly close the energy gap. He described the project as a shift from fragmented power supply efforts to an integrated and scalable electricity system capable of supporting businesses, creating jobs, and improving living standards.
The commissioner also highlighted the role of the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OYSERC) in overseeing electricity operations within the state, urging residents to channel complaints regarding electricity supply and tariffs, particularly those involving IBEDC, through the commission. He further revealed that the state has secured partnerships, including a Memorandum of Understanding with Shell for gas supply, while attracting nearly 30 prospective investors under its 2026–2036 Integrated Electricity Resource Plan. He added that the government is exploring additional energy sources, including hydroelectric power generation at Asejire.
Shangodoyin noted that the independent power project will provide electricity to key infrastructure such as the State Secretariat, Government House, BCOS, judiciary complexes, Adeoyo State Hospital, Lekan Salami Sports Complex, and surrounding areas, enhancing service delivery and boosting commercial activities.
