The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has announced Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal 1447AH, marking the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr across Nigeria.

The declaration followed the non-sighting of the crescent moon on Wednesday, the 29th day of Ramadan. Consequently, Thursday, March 19, will be observed as the 30th day of Ramadan in accordance with Islamic tradition.

The decision was ratified by Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, after receiving reports from the National Moon Sighting Committee.
In his message, the Sultan congratulated Muslims on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast and called for sustained prayers for peace, unity, and national development. He also urged the faithful to uphold the values of discipline, devotion, and selflessness imbibed during the holy month.

The announcement ensures a uniform celebration of Eid-el-Fitr across the country and underscores the pivotal role of the Sultanate in coordinating Islamic religious observances in Nigeria.
