Following the intervention of Vice President Kashim Shettima, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has called off its proposed nationwide strike.
Reacting to the development, the Oyo State Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Dr. Uthman Adedeji, said the Vice President’s timely engagement with the national leadership of the association was instrumental to the suspension of the strike action.
Dr. Adedeji explained that the resident doctors’ demands revolve around welfare issues, payment of outstanding entitlements, reinstatement of some retrenched medical doctors, and improved working conditions.
He noted that during the meeting with Vice President Shettima, some of the demands were addressed, while firm assurances were given by the Federal Government on the outstanding concerns.
Dr. Adedeji stressed that based on the level of intervention and commitments made, the association resolved to suspend the strike in the interest of patients and public health.
He confirmed that resident doctors have fully resumed duties nationwide, with patients currently being attended to in hospitals, adding that the association will review the situation on January 25, 2026, to determine whether to press further on its demands or completely step down the agitation.
