Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has charged traditional religion adherents in the state to ensure that their children are actively involved in their way of life for the continuity of Yoruba culture and tradition.
The governor gave the charge on Wednesday at the 2025 Isese Day Grand Finale, organised by the Oyo State Government in collaboration with the Heads of Traditional Religion in the state. The event, held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, had as its theme “Unity is the Way to Success.” The colourful celebration drew worshippers, cultural enthusiasts, and dignitaries from across the state, featuring prayers, songs, and displays of Yoruba heritage.
Representing the governor, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, said the administration remains committed to preserving culture, tradition, and religious harmony in Oyo State. He noted that the recognition of Isese Day as a public holiday reflects the government’s respect for inclusivity and urged worshippers to see unity as the foundation for peace and development. Dr. Olatubosun also pointed out that Oyo remains the only state with a Yoruba festival acknowledged by UNESCO, assuring that the government will continue to support the promotion of cultural heritage and traditional beliefs.
In their remarks, the Araba Awo of Ibadanland, Chief Ifalere Odegbemi, and the President of the Council of Traditional Religion in Oyo State, Chief Omikunmi Egbelade, both stressed the importance of unity among traditional religion practitioners and citizens.
While Chief Odegbemi described the celebration as a reminder of the enduring relevance of Yoruba traditional religion, Chief Egbelade noted that harmony among different faiths would sustain cultural values and strengthen communal bonds. The event ended with traditional prayers for the progress of Oyo State.
