The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as “Elena” following an alleged Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure at a clinic in the state.
The probe is being carried out by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the state body responsible for regulating health facilities.
Reports circulating on social media indicated that the woman developed complications either during or shortly after undergoing the cosmetic surgery.
In a statement on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Abiola Idowu, assured the public that authorities would conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
She said, preliminary findings show that the clinic where the procedure was reportedly performed is registered with HEFAMAA. She, however, emphasised that registration does not exempt any health facility from regulatory scrutiny, particularly in cases involving patient safety.
Idowu explained that the agency has commenced a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the death. The process includes verifying the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved, assessing the level of care provided before, during and after the procedure, and evaluating the facility’s compliance with regulatory standards for cosmetic surgeries.
She added that aesthetic and cosmetic procedures in Lagos State are governed by strict guidelines covering facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention and control, patient consent, anaesthetic safety, and emergency response capacity.
The state government urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could compromise the ongoing investigation.
Authorities also warned members of the public against patronising unaccredited facilities for cosmetic or aesthetic procedures.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting residents through strict regulatory oversight, continuous monitoring of health facilities and enforcement of healthcare standards across the state.
HEFAMAA noted that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
