The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it will issue a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections in compliance with the newly amended Electoral Act 2026.
Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Adedayo Oketola, disclosed that the commission is reviewing its earlier schedule to align with the provisions of the amended law. He noted that the electoral body remains committed to operating strictly within the framework of the Act.
Oketola, who spoke in response to calls by some political parties for a fresh timetable, did not specify when the new schedule would be released but assured that INEC would act in accordance with the law.
INEC had earlier fixed February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls were slated for March 6, 2027. However, the announcement drew criticism from sections of the public, particularly some Muslim organisations, who argued that the dates coincided with the holy month of Ramadan.
