The Oyo State Government has raised fresh concerns over escalating temperatures, warning residents to take proactive steps to avoid heat related illnesses as a wave of extreme weather grips parts of the country.

The alert, prompted by forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, highlights a growing health risk linked to intense heat conditions currently affecting multiple states, including Oyo.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, said the situation demands increased public awareness, noting that temperatures peaking around 41 degrees Celsius could trigger cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion and, in severe instances, heatstroke.

He advised residents to adjust daily routines by avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, particularly during peak afternoon hours, while encouraging those who must go out to make use of shaded areas to minimise direct heat impact.

The government also emphasised the importance of consistent fluid intake, recommending regular consumption of water alongside fruits and vegetables with high moisture content to help the body cope with the harsh conditions.

Residents were further urged to wear light clothing and adopt protective measures such as the use of hats and umbrellas, while ensuring that living and working spaces are well ventilated to reduce heat retention indoors.

Aderinto cautioned against leaving vulnerable individuals, especially children and the elderly, in parked vehicles, describing such actions as dangerous due to the rapid rise in enclosed temperatures.
He added that early warning signs such as weakness, dizziness and nausea should not be ignored, urging residents to look out for neighbours who may be at higher risk.

Beyond immediate safety, the commissioner called for collective action in addressing environmental factors contributing to heat intensity, including the preservation of trees and expansion of green areas.
The state government, he said, remains committed to monitoring weather developments and keeping residents informed as conditions evolve.
