The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has resumed rehabilitation work on major federal roads in the Oke-Ogun axis of Oyo State, following growing concerns over frequent road crashes and the poor state of infrastructure in the area.
Road maintenance in parts of the region had earlier slowed due to security challenges, including cases of kidnapping and banditry. However, the agency has now commenced sectional repairs on the Kishi and Ago-Are–Saki roads, a development that has been welcomed by motorists and residents.
Some road users noted that the deteriorating condition of roads in the agrarian Oke-Ogun zone had led to rising transport costs and increased prices of farm produce transported to markets across the state. They expressed optimism that the ongoing rehabilitation would reduce accidents and ease the movement of goods and passengers.
A resident, Abdulraman Maruf Abiola, described the intervention as timely, adding that regular maintenance of roads in the area would help curb accidents and reduce the cost of transportation. He also appealed to relevant authorities to address other damaged sections along the Kishi–Igbeti road.
Speaking on the project, Engr. Olutunde Adepoju of the Oyo State Field Office of Federal Road Maintenance Agency attributed the prolonged neglect of some federal roads in the Oke-Ogun corridor to insecurity and inadequate maintenance culture.
He explained that many of the roads were originally constructed between 1979 and 1980 and have since suffered from years of poor maintenance, noting that the current repairs are aimed at making the affected sections motorable while awaiting more comprehensive rehabilitation.
