A three member panel of the Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan, led by Justice Biobele Georgewill, has granted parties involved in the dispute over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elective convention leave to explore settlement.
The appellate court also adjourned the case sine die following the agreement of counsels representing the parties to pursue a peaceful resolution of the matter.
During proceedings on Wednesday, Justice Georgewill urged all parties to take into consideration the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections while working towards resolving the dispute.
He stated that the court granted leave to allow the parties meet, either individually or collectively, to find an amicable solution to the issues before the court. He added that the court must be formally informed in writing of the outcome of the settlement discussions.
Justice Georgewill further directed that all pending motions relating to the case be adjourned sine die to enable the settlement process.
In a brief interview with journalists after the sitting, counsel to some of the parties, Sunday Ibrahim, SAN, said the parties had expressed readiness to resolve the dispute and would report back to the court if an agreement is reached
He declined further comments, noting that additional remarks could prejudice the ongoing settlement process.
Similarly, another counsel in the matter, Musibau Adetunmbi, SAN, confirmed that the court had adjourned all matters relating to the PDP elective convention sine die.
Recall that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja had earlier invalidated the party’s elective convention held in Ibadan and upheld the decision of the party’s disciplinary committee against some members.
However, Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court had earlier ruled in favour of the convention held in Ibadan in a suit filed by Folahan Malomo Adelabi through his counsel, Musibau Adetunmbi, SAN.
