The 2027 governorship campaign of th Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oyo State received a boost on Wednesday as leaders of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) for schools and colleges and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) expressed support for the party’s governorship candidate, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi.The unions made their positions known when Adekanmbi met with their representatives in Oyo town on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, where they also outlined key demands for improved welfare and development of the state’s education sector.Speaking on behalf of NASU, the union’s state representative, Comrade Folorunsho Oluwabunmi, who is also the Oyo State Treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), commended Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration for its workers’ welfare initiatives.
She, however, presented a memorandum of demands to Adekanmbi, including the introduction of a “peculiarity allowance” for NASU members, arguing that non-academic staff in schools and colleges work throughout the year, including during holidays.
The NUT also presented its expectations, including improved car and housing loans, rural allowances for teachers serving in remote communities, easier processing of Certificates of Occupancy, electronic lesson notes, digitisation of schools and regular training and retraining of teachers.
The union also raised concerns over delays in promotions and the payment of outstanding leave grants.
In his reaction, Adekanmbi assured the unions that salaries, pensions and other statutory emoluments would remain protected under his administration, while promising to review the other demands if elected. He also outlined plans for curriculum upgrades, e-learning, school digitisation and capacity-building for teachers and education workers.
The Oyo NUT Zonal Chairman, Comrade Fakorede Phillip, subsequently declared support for APM candidates in the state, while union representatives expressed willingness to mobilise support for the party ahead of the 2027 election.
