Igbo community leaders in Oyo State have reaffirmed its strong backing for Governor Seyi Makinde, citing his governance style as inclusive and development driven.
This position was made known during a stakeholders’ briefing in Ibadan, where representatives from various Igbo groups across the state highlighted improvements in infrastructure, security, and the business climate under the current administration.
The meeting was convened with the support of former federal lawmaker Rita Orji, who brought together community figures from Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, and Abia states resident in Oyo.
Participants at the gathering noted that the prevailing atmosphere of peace across Ibadan, Oyo Town, Ogbomoso, and other areas has enabled non indigenes to thrive economically, describing the governor’s leadership as fair and stabilising.
They also signalled political alignment with Makinde’s future direction, including support for his preferred successor in 2027.
Amid rising political rhetoric, the group advised caution, warning that comments from outside the state could inflame tensions.
It specifically faulted remarks linked to former Ekiti governor Ayo Fayose, urging him and other actors to refrain from interfering in Oyo’s affairs. Allegations of broader political manoeuvres involving Nyesom Wike were also dismissed as distractions from governance.
Reiterating their stance, the stakeholders emphasised that Oyo State’s steady progress is anchored on peace and responsible leadership.
They called on political actors to prioritise unity within party structures and avoid statements capable of creating division, insisting that residents remain focused on development rather than political theatrics.
