The Oyo State Government has called for stronger collaboration among licensed miners, host communities and regulatory agencies to ensure safe, responsible and sustainable mining operations across the state.
The call was made through the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), which noted that rising security and environmental concerns around mining activities make it imperative for all stakeholders to work together to safeguard lives, protect host communities and secure investments in the sector.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held at the OYSMIDA office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, the Director-General of the agency and Special Adviser on Mineral Development to Governor Seyi Makinde, Honourable Abiodun Oni, said the mining sector remains a key pillar in the administration’s economic expansion drive.
He explained that the state government’s renewed focus on the sector is also driven by the need to address security challenges linked to mining activities, stressing that safeguarding mining communities aligns with the broader security priorities of the Makinde administration.
Oni disclosed that the government had taken proactive steps, including the signing of an Executive Order, to enhance the protection of mining communities and regulate activities within the sector.

He further urged all stakeholders including miners, community leaders and relevant government agencies work in synergy to maintain peace, order and accountability in mining areas.
According to him, a clear understanding and respect for defined roles and responsibilities among stakeholders would foster a more productive, secure and sustainable mining environment in Oyo State.
The government reiterated its commitment to creating a mining sector that not only contributes significantly to the state’s economy but also upholds environmental standards and community well-being.
