The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged the state government to urgently evacuate destitute persons from major streets and public places across the state over rising environmental, security and humanitarian concerns.
The call followed a motion moved at plenary by Hon. Babajide Adebayo (Ibadan North II), who drew the attention of the House to the increasing number of destitute persons occupying road medians, markets and other public spaces, particularly within Ibadan. He warned that the situation could pose public health risks and tarnish the state’s image if not addressed promptly.
Supporting the motion, the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, alongside other lawmakers, called for decisive government intervention, recommending measures such as evacuation, rehabilitation and reintegration programmes to help affected individuals become self-reliant.
The House also considered the 2026 capital budget proposals of the 33 local government areas and deliberated on curbing the activities of unlicensed foreign cashew buyers at farm gates. The Assembly thereafter adjourned plenary to Tuesday, March 24.
