Commission (INEC) has disclosed plans to review the Electoral Act 2026 in line with preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Mr. Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said the commission would soon release a revised election timetable. Although he did not give a specific date, he stressed that INEC remains committed to complying strictly with the law.
The development follows calls by several political parties urging the commission to publish a new timetable in view of the recently amended Electoral Act. Party leaders argued that an updated schedule is necessary to enable them conduct primaries and other internal processes ahead of the polls.
INEC had earlier fixed February 20, 2027 for the presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027 for governorship and state Assembly polls.
However, the dates attracted criticism, especially from Muslim groups, who noted a clash with the Ramadan period.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly has amended the Electoral Act, reducing the mandatory notice period for elections from 360 to 300 days, a move expected to give INEC more flexibility in scheduling the 2027 elections.
Legal experts say the commission must now align its preparations with the new law.
